Combining the Maldives with another destination

Two-country trips via the Gulf, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia or Türkiye, and how to fit the Maldives in.

Many travellers fly a long way to reach the Maldives, and their route already passes through another interesting place. Adding a few days there turns one holiday into two: city, culture or wildlife first, then lagoons and calm island days.

This guide explains the most popular combinations, which way round tends to work best, and how to fit the Maldives part around flights and resort transfers.

Why combine two destinations

A Maldives resort stay is about rest: the beach, the reef and very little to organise. That makes it a natural partner for a busier destination with sights, food and things to explore. Pairing them also makes the most of a long journey, especially if you are already changing planes on the way.

Our flying to the Maldives guide explains which regions have good connections to Velana International Airport.

Which way round?

Most guests prefer to finish in the Maldives. You do the sightseeing while you are fresh, then end with island days and fly home relaxed.

Starting in the Maldives also works, for example if a flight connection is easier that way or you want to rest after a long journey first. Whichever order you choose, try to keep at least a few nights for each part, so travel days don't take over the trip.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the closest neighbour and one of the most popular pairings. The flight is short, and the island offers tea country, wildlife parks, ancient cities and a coastline of its own. Its culture and landscapes are very different from the Maldives, which makes the combination feel like two holidays.

The Gulf

Many travellers already connect in a Gulf hub on the way to the Maldives. Breaking the journey there for a few days gives you city sights, desert trips and good food, and turns one long journey into two shorter ones.

Southeast Asia

Travellers from Asia, Australia and further afield often combine the Maldives with a city or beach stop in Southeast Asia. Direct flights link the Maldives with several regional hubs, so a short city break before or after your island stay is easy to plan.

Türkiye

Istanbul is a well-connected hub with direct flights to the Maldives. A few days of history, markets and food there make a lively contrast with quiet island days.

Planning the Maldives part

Your arrival time in the Maldives decides which resorts work best. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so if your flight lands late, a speedboat resort close to the airport or a night near the airport may suit you better. Our arrival and departure day guide and our transfers guide explain how this works.

Plan your flight out of the Maldives in the same way. A late-afternoon or evening flight gives you time for the transfer back, while a very early flight may mean leaving the resort the evening before.

Entry rules and luggage

Each country has its own entry rules, so check the official requirements for every country on your route. For the Maldives, our visa and entry guide explains the free visa on arrival and the traveller declaration. Our customs guide explains what you cannot bring into the Maldives, which matters if you shop elsewhere first.

Seaplanes have stricter luggage limits than international flights. If you are bringing extra bags from the first part of your trip, tell us so we can check with the resort.

Island time at the end

If you finish in the Maldives, choose a resort that fits the mood you want after a busy few days: a small island for quiet, or a larger one with more to do. Our guide on how to choose a Maldives resort can help, and we will suggest hand-picked resorts that match your flights.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best country to combine with the Maldives?

It depends on your route and interests. Sri Lanka is the closest and most popular, and Gulf hubs, Southeast Asia and Türkiye are easy to add because many flights already connect there.

Should I visit the Maldives first or last?

Most guests finish in the Maldives so they can end the trip relaxed. Starting there also works if your flights are easier that way.

How many nights should I spend in the Maldives on a two-country trip?

Enough to enjoy the island once the travel days are done. Keep at least a few nights, and remember that arrival and departure days include transfers.

Can I fly directly from Sri Lanka to the Maldives?

Yes. Flights between Sri Lanka and Velana International Airport are short and frequent.

Do I need a visa for the Maldives if I arrive from another country?

Tourists receive a free visa on arrival in the Maldives, whichever country they fly from. Check the entry rules for the other countries on your route separately.

Does my arrival time affect which resort I choose?

Yes. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late arrivals often suit a speedboat resort close to the airport or a night near the airport.
