Your first and last days in the Maldives are the ones that need a little planning. You may land after a long flight, wait for a transfer, arrive before your villa is ready, or have hours to fill between check-out and a late flight home.
This guide explains how arrival and departure days usually work at a Maldives resort, so you know what to expect and what to ask.
After you land
Once you have passed immigration and customs and collected your luggage, a representative from your resort meets you in the arrivals hall. From there, the resort team takes care of you: they check your names, tag your luggage and take you to your transfer. Our airports guide explains the arrival steps at Velana in detail.
Keep your hand luggage with you, along with anything you need for the next few hours: sunglasses, a hat, any medicines and a change of clothes.
Waiting for your transfer
How long you wait depends on the transfer. Speedboats often leave soon after you arrive. Seaplane and domestic flight schedules are planned around many guests and flights, so a wait is normal. Many resorts have their own lounge near the airport with seats, drinks, Wi-Fi and washrooms, where you can rest until it is time to go.
Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so if you land after dark, you may need a night near the airport. Our transfers guide explains the options, and the Malé guide has ideas if you have a few hours to spare.
Arriving on your island

Most guests are welcomed on the jetty by the resort team, often with a cold towel and a drink. Check-in is usually relaxed: you may sit down at reception, or the paperwork may be done in your villa. You will typically be asked for your passport and a card for incidental charges.
A host then shows you to your villa and explains how the island works: restaurant times, the house reef, activities, buggies and how to reach reception. It is a good moment to ask about anything you need, from a dietary request to a special occasion.
Your luggage follows separately and is brought to your villa.
If your villa is not ready

Check-in time at most resorts is in the afternoon. If you arrive early in the morning, your villa may not be ready yet. Resorts usually help in one of these ways:
- a place to change and freshen up, near the pool or the spa
- lunch or a drink while you wait
- an early check-in, when the villa is free; some resorts charge for this
If you know you will arrive early, it is worth booking the villa from the night before. That way it is ready when you land and you can go straight to bed after a night flight. We can arrange this for you.
Your last day: check-out
Check-out time is usually around midday. The resort will confirm your transfer time the day before, based on your flight. This matters most for seaplanes, which fly only in daylight and are scheduled around many guests.
The evening before you leave, ask reception to print your bill so you can check it calmly. Our money and tipping guide explains the lines you will see. If you plan to dive on your last days, plan your final dive around your departure; our staying safe guide explains why.
Late check-out and day rooms

If your flight leaves in the evening, you have a few choices:
- Late check-out. You keep your villa for a few extra hours. It depends on availability and may carry a charge.
- Day room. Some resorts offer a room to use for the afternoon, with a shower before you leave.
- Departure lounge. Many resorts have a lounge with showers where you can wait with your luggage stored.
Ask about these when you book or soon after you arrive, as they depend on how busy the resort is.
Your last evening

Many guests save a special dinner for the last night: a table on the beach, a sunset drink or a favourite restaurant. On the last morning, have a final swim and pack before breakfast so you can enjoy the time you have left. Staff collect your luggage from the villa and take it to the jetty or the airport for you.
