Weddings and Celebrations with Guests

Destination weddings, vow renewals and milestone birthdays when family and friends are coming too.

A wedding or celebration with guests is part ceremony and part group trip. This page covers the group side: rooms for your guests, getting everyone there and venues for a larger party. For how ceremonies themselves work, including symbolic and legal weddings, read our weddings and vow renewals guide.

Rooms for your guests

  • Count the rooms early. Guests often want different villa types, so a resort with a good mix is easier.
  • Keep everyone on one island. It makes the ceremony, dinners and photos far simpler.
  • Different lengths of stay. Some guests may come for a few nights only, which resorts can usually handle.

Venues for a larger party

  • A beach set-up for the ceremony, sized to your guest list
  • A private dinner on the beach or on a deck over the lagoon
  • A marquee or event hall for a big reception
  • A sandbank or boat setting for a small, close group

Sandbank and boat events usually suit small numbers only. Larger receptions work best at resorts with marquees or halls, such as Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Kandima and Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi. Capacities are confirmed when you enquire.

Getting your guests there

Guests often fly in from different countries on different days. Speedboat resorts make staggered arrivals easy, while seaplane and domestic flight resorts need each arrival planned. Our transfers guide explains the options. Seaplane and domestic flight transfers have luggage limits, so plan for outfits and decorations.

Other celebrations

  • Vow renewals with children and grandchildren
  • Milestone birthdays and anniversaries
  • Family reunions across several generations
