Planning a honeymoon in the Maldives

Overwater or beach villa, adults-only or lively, which month and which meal plan: a calm guide to planning the Maldives honeymoon you have in mind.

Few places suit a honeymoon as naturally as the Maldives. Each resort has its own island, the lagoons are calm and clear, and days can be as quiet or as full as you like. With so many resorts to choose from, though, the planning can feel like a lot. This guide walks through the choices that matter most, in the order we'd make them.

1. Choose the style of resort first

Before you look at villas, decide on the mood you want. Resorts differ far more in atmosphere than photos suggest.

  • Adults-only and quiet. Some resorts don't accept children, and others keep a calm, adults-leaning feel. They're ideal if you picture long, unhurried days and peaceful dinners.
  • Design-led and private. Smaller resorts with large villas, private pools and discreet service, often with a butler or villa host. Best if privacy is your priority.
  • Lively and social. Resorts with beach clubs, many restaurants and evening entertainment. A good fit if you want energy and variety.
  • All-inclusive and easy. Resorts where meals, drinks and some activities are included, so you rarely think about a bill. Good for relaxed couples who want simplicity.

Island size matters too. A small island feels intimate, and you'll know the staff by name within days. A larger island offers more restaurants and space to explore.

2. Overwater or beach villa?

This is the question almost every couple asks.

Overwater villas

Overwater villas, also called water villas, stand on stilts above the lagoon with a deck and steps straight into the sea. Many have a glass floor panel, an outdoor bath or a private pool. They're the classic Maldives image, with sea views from bed and wonderful sunsets.

Consider: they can be a walk from the beach and restaurants, and the lagoon below may be shallow at low tide.

Beach villas

Beach villas open onto the sand, usually with a garden, an outdoor shower and shade from palms. Many couples find them more private and more grounded, with the beach a few steps away.

Consider: views are at sea level, and privacy depends on the vegetation and spacing.

Things that make a difference

  • Sunset or sunrise side. Sunset-facing villas are in demand for evening drinks on the deck. Sunrise villas are often quieter and sometimes easier to find.
  • Private pool. Lovely for lazy afternoons and in-villa dining. Even overwater villas often include one.
  • Splitting your stay. Many couples spend a few nights in a beach villa and a few overwater, or two nights at a second resort. Ask us whether a split stay suits your dates.

3. Pick a meal plan that matches your days

Your resort is usually the only place to eat on the island, so the meal plan matters more than on a city break.

  • Half board (breakfast and dinner) suits couples who skip lunch or prefer a light snack by the pool.
  • Full board adds lunch, but drinks are usually extra.
  • All-inclusive covers meals and selected drinks, which makes budgeting simple. It's especially good value if you enjoy wine with dinner or cocktails at sunset.

Our guide to meal plans explains the details. If you plan a lot of special dinners, such as a beach table or a dinner on a sandbank, ask how those work with your plan.

4. Choose your timing

The drier northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings the most reliable sunshine and is the most popular time for honeymoons. February and March are usually especially settled. The southwest monsoon, roughly mid-May to November, brings more showers and wind, but resorts are quieter, and it's the main season for manta rays.

If your wedding falls over Christmas or New Year, book early: festive dates are the busiest of the year, and many resorts set minimum stays. Our guide to the best time to visit has a month-by-month table.

5. Romantic experiences worth planning

  • A sandbank picnic or private dinner. Many resorts can set up a table on a nearby sandbank or a quiet stretch of beach.
  • A sunset cruise. Often on a traditional dhoni, and dolphins are frequently seen.
  • Snorkelling the house reef. Turtles, reef sharks and rays are common sights on many reefs.
  • Dinner below the waterline. A few resorts, including Anantara Kihavah Villas and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, have underwater restaurants.
  • A couples' spa ritual. Many spas have overwater treatment rooms.
  • Wildlife encounters. Manta rays, depending on the season and the atoll, or whale sharks, which are seen all year in South Ari.
  • A symbolic ceremony or vow renewal. Many resorts arrange beautiful beach ceremonies. These are symbolic: foreign visitors can't legally register a marriage in the Maldives, so complete the legal side at home.

Practical tips

  • Tell us it's your honeymoon. Many resorts offer honeymoon touches, such as a cake, flowers or a special dinner. Some ask for a marriage certificate dated within a certain period, so check what's needed.
  • Match your transfer to your flight. After a long journey, a late seaplane connection isn't ideal. If you land in the evening, consider a speedboat resort or one night near the airport. Our transfers guide explains the options.
  • Don't bring alcohol. Maldives customs doesn't allow visitors to bring alcohol into the country, including duty-free purchases. Resorts are licensed to serve it.
  • Dress respectfully off the resort. The Maldives is a Muslim country. Swimwear is fine at the resort, but cover shoulders and knees when visiting Malé or local islands.
  • Leave space in the plan. The best honeymoon days are often the ones with nothing booked at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is an overwater villa or a beach villa better for a honeymoon?

Both work beautifully. Overwater villas give sea views and direct lagoon access; beach villas often feel more private, with the sand at your door. Some couples split their stay to enjoy both.

What is the best month for a Maldives honeymoon?

February and March usually bring the most settled weather, and December to April is the drier season overall. May to November is quieter, with passing showers.

Can we legally get married in the Maldives?

Foreign visitors can't legally register a marriage in the Maldives. Resorts offer symbolic ceremonies and vow renewals, so complete the legal marriage in your home country.

Which meal plan is best for a honeymoon?

Half board suits couples who skip lunch, while all-inclusive keeps budgeting simple if you enjoy drinks with meals. It depends on how you like to spend your days.

How many nights should a Maldives honeymoon be?

Most couples stay five to ten nights. A week gives you time to settle in after a long journey. With ten nights or more, a split between two villas or two resorts is worth considering.
