Stargazing in the Maldives

Clear night skies, an overwater observatory and stargazing from your villa.

Far from big cities, the Maldives has some of the darkest night skies many guests have ever seen. On a clear night, the stars stretch down to the horizon, and you may even see the Milky Way. This guide explains where to stargaze and how to make the most of the night sky. For more night-time magic, see our bioluminescence guide.

Why the night sky is special

Resort islands are small and surrounded by open sea, so there is little light around you. Once you step away from the restaurants and pathways, the sky opens up. Near the equator, you can see stars from both the northern and southern skies.

An overwater observatory

Anantara Kihavah Villas

Anantara Kihavah Villas has SKY, described by the resort as the first overwater observatory in the Maldives, with a powerful telescope. A guide shares stories of the constellations and planets, and you can join a group session or book a private session for two. Sessions depend on the weather.

Stargazing at your villa

You do not need a telescope to enjoy the stars. An overwater deck or a quiet stretch of beach is perfect for lying back and looking up. Many resorts can also arrange a dinner on the beach or a sandbank under the stars; see our sandbanks and picnic islands guide.

Tips for a clear night

  • Choose a night with little cloud and, ideally, little moonlight.
  • Move away from bright lights, and give your eyes time to adjust.
  • Use a stargazing app to find planets and constellations.
  • Ask the resort about guided sessions.

Quick checklist

  • Ask us about resorts with stargazing sessions.
  • Book any guided session early.
  • Pick a clear night with little moonlight.
  • Find a dark spot on the beach or your deck.
  • Bring a stargazing app.
