Private island resorts in the Maldives

One island, one resort: small secluded islands, private villas and residences, and how to choose.

In the Maldives, almost every resort sits on its own island. That is why the country is known for private island holidays. This guide explains what "private island" really means for individual guests, how island size affects privacy, and how to find the most secluded stay.

One island, one resort

Each resort island has only one resort and its guests and team. You won't find public roads, traffic or other hotels on the island. Even at larger resorts, the beach, lagoon and restaurants are shared only with other resort guests.

Small islands and seclusion

Anantara Kihavah Villas

Small islands with few villas feel the most private. You see fewer people, walks are short and the team quickly learns your name. Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat are examples of small, quiet islands. Larger islands have more restaurants and activities but feel busier.

Private villas and residences

For even more privacy, some resorts offer large residences with their own pool, garden or beach area, and sometimes a dedicated host. Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and Anantara Kihavah Villas both offer large private villas. Our overwater vs beach villas guide explains the villa types.

Booking a whole island

Booking a whole island for a group or event is a different kind of stay. Our island buyouts and private events page explains how it works.

How to choose

Think about how much you want to do. A small island is best for quiet days, while a larger one gives you more choice. Check the transfer too: Speedboat islands are quick to reach, and Seaplane islands often feel more remote. Our how to choose a Maldives resort guide covers the main differences.

Quick checklist

  • Choose island size based on how private you want it to feel.
  • Ask how many villas the resort has.
  • Consider a residence or a villa with its own pool.
  • Check the transfer type and time.
  • See our groups pages if you want the whole island.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Maldives resort have its own island?

Almost all do. Each resort island has one resort, so you share it only with other guests.

What is the most private kind of resort?

A small island with few villas, or a large private residence at a bigger resort.

Can I book a whole island?

Yes, for groups and events. See our island buyouts page.

Are private island resorts far from the airport?

Not always. Some are reached by Speedboat, others by Seaplane or Domestic flight.

Yes, unless you book a whole island, but on a small island you see few of them.

Which resorts have large private villas?

In our portfolio, Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and Anantara Kihavah Villas both offer large private villas. Ask us for more options.
