South Ari Atoll resorts: our hand-picked guide

Compare South Ari resorts by transfer, house reef, meal plan and trip style.

South Ari Atoll has a varied list of hand-picked resorts: quiet retreats, reef-focused islands, all-inclusive stays and larger resorts with room to spread out. This guide helps you compare them by location, journey and the kind of holiday you want.

The resort cards after this guide cover each island in more detail. For a wider view of where South Ari sits, see our guide to Maldives atolls.

About South Ari Atoll

Ari Atoll lies west of Malé, across open water, and is divided into North Ari and South Ari. Like other atolls, it is a ring of coral reef around a lagoon, with islands along the reef. South Ari includes resorts close to the area known for whale shark sightings.

Use the resort map to see where the islands sit within the atoll. The map gives you a sense of location; the resort details will help you compare what each island offers.

Getting to South Ari

Most of our hand-picked South Ari resorts are reached by seaplane from Malé. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island and Villa Park, Sun Island can each be reached by seaplane or domestic flight. Seaplanes fly in daylight, so the journey is planned around your flight times. Our transfer guide explains the options.

The sea and marine life

The outer reef along southern Ari is the South Ari Marine Protected Area, known for whale shark sightings. Mantas are also seen at sites around Ari. These animals move with currents and food, so sightings are never guaranteed. Read more in our manta ray and whale shark guide.

If you want to snorkel from the island, compare the reef details rather than assuming every lagoon is alike. Angaga Island Resort and Spa has house-reef snorkelling, Constance Moofushi Resort has coral gardens and a house reef, and Diamonds Athuruga Beach & Water Villas offers house-reef snorkelling from the beach. Diamonds Thudufushi Beach & Water Villas pairs lagoon snorkelling with dive centre trips. Our house reef guide explains what to look for.

For a quieter couples’ stay, compare Drift Thelu Veliga Retreat, a smaller retreat with spa time and reef excursions, with Nova Maldives, which has contemporary villas and an adults-leaning atmosphere. Angaga is another straightforward choice when diving and an unhurried island rhythm matter most.

For all-inclusive stays, Constance Moofushi Resort combines its meal plan with a reef and dive centre, while Lily Beach Resort offers beach, water and pool villa categories alongside diving and snorkelling. Athuruga also has all-inclusive options; ask us what each plan includes. Our meal plans guide can help you compare them.

For families or friends who want more space and activity, LUX South Ari Atoll, Maldives has lively dining on a large island, and Villa Park, Sun Island has long beaches, sports facilities and several restaurants. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island offers family suites and underwater dining across two linked islands.

For a relaxed island stay with diving or snorkelling, consider Diamonds Thudufushi Beach & Water Villas or its sister resort Athuruga. NH Kuda Rah Maldives has beach and water villas, including private pool options, and dive and snorkel trips.
