There is no single right number of nights for the Maldives. It depends on how far you are flying, how you reach your resort and what you want to do once you arrive. This guide explains how to think about the length of your stay, with simple sample plans for couples, families and divers.
Short stays
A short stay of three or four nights works best when the Maldives is close to home or part of a longer trip. Choose a resort with a short Speedboat transfer from the airport, so you don't lose half a day each way. You will have time to rest, snorkel the house reef and enjoy a sunset or two, but not much more.
A standard stay
Most guests stay around five to seven nights. That gives you one day to arrive, several full days to settle into island life and one day to leave. It is enough time for a few excursions, a spa treatment and some days with no plans at all.
Longer stays
Ten nights or more suit guests who are flying a long way, divers who want several days on different sites, and anyone who simply wants a proper rest. On a longer stay, many guests split their time between two resorts, for example a lively island first and a quieter one at the end.
How transfers change the plan

Your transfer type decides how much of each travel day you keep. Speedboat resorts near the airport are quick to reach at almost any time. Seaplane resorts are reached by a scenic flight that runs only in daylight, so late arrivals may need a night near the airport first. Resorts reached by Domestic flight usually add a short boat ride at the end.
Our transfers guide explains each option, and our arrival and departure day guide shows how to plan the first and last days.
Splitting your stay between two resorts
Two resorts can give you two different holidays in one trip: a large island with lots to do and a small, quiet one, or a beach villa followed by an overwater villa. Each move takes part of a day, so it works best on stays of about a week or longer. Keep at least three or four nights in each place.
Sample day plans

- Couples, five nights: arrival and a sunset drink, two lazy beach and reef days, a sandbank picnic or sunset cruise, a spa afternoon, and departure.
- Families, seven nights: a gentle first day, kids club mornings, lagoon snorkelling together, a dolphin trip, a pool and beach day, and a relaxed last evening.
- Divers, ten nights: a check dive on the first full day, then a rhythm of two dives a day with rest days between, and no diving in the last day before your flight home, as dive centres ask.
Our guides to snorkelling, diving and excursions can help you fill the days.

Frequently asked questions
How many nights are enough for the Maldives?
Most guests find five to seven nights a good balance. Three or four nights can work with a short Speedboat transfer, and longer stays suit long-haul travellers and divers.
Is three nights in the Maldives worth it?
It can be, if you stay close to the airport and keep the plan simple. A short transfer means you spend more of your time on the island.
Should I stay at one resort or two?
One resort is simpler and more relaxing. Two resorts work well on stays of about a week or longer, with three or four nights in each.
Do arrival and departure days count?
Yes. They include flights and transfers, so plan them as lighter days with time to rest.
How many nights do I need for a honeymoon?
Many couples choose about a week. Our honeymoon guide covers ideas for your time together.
Can I combine the Maldives with another country?
Yes. Our guide to combining the Maldives with another destination explains popular routes.
